Vintage Silkscreen Print
26" x 20"
Signed in pencil "Thomas W. Benton"
Thomas W. Benton created 100 of these prints in 1980 to support Sal A. Mander's write-in campaign for district attorney of Aspen. During that campaign, the incumbent Chuck Leidner (who was running unapposed) had upset locals with his plan to use undercover agents from the DEA to "clean up the town". Sal was the brainchild of the cartoonist Chris Cassett, who created the character to give a voice to those opposed to Leidner's policies. A famous saying at the time was "it's your choice, the lizard or the snake". Sal ran unssuccessfully on the "newtist" ticket for mayor of Aspen, district attorney, and even Governor of Colorado in the 1980's. During the district attorney race, sal garnered a 3-1 vote margin of victory. Although the votes were thrown out, Leidner resigned after the election
