Sergey Ponomarev is a freelance photographer. Born in Moscow, December 1980. Before becoming a freelancer in 2012, Sergey worked for the Associated Press starting in 2003.

Sergey is best known for his photojournalism works depicting Russian daily life and culture as well as news images from wars and conflicts in Middle East including Syria, Gaza, Iraq and Libya.

He has won many international and domestic photography awards. In 2016 Sergey was part of The New York Times team that has won Pulitzer prize for reporting on Refugee Crisis in Europe, also he won many international and domestic photography awards including World Press Photo, Pictures of the Year, Overseas Press Club and others.

Most recently, he won Robert Capa Gold Medal with The New York Times for courage and enterprise in photographic reporting abroad. Also he won first place prize, in the General News category at World Press Photo contest for European Refugee crisis, was finalist at the Pulitzer prize in 2015. Sergey graduated Moscow State University and Academy of Labor and Social Relations.
